Fondant on my Cake



My fondant class met tonight. This time, we were supposed to bring in a cake, frosted with fondant. We would work on learning how to decorate while we were in class.



This is the finished product. I did some in class, but most of the work I actually did after class because we spent all the class time learning our tools, but that sort of thing doesn't make a very pretty cake. I kept squishing up my "finished" fondants; I wanted a pretty cake.



The back flower is the one I made the other day. I made the front daisy this evening. You can see how I've learned a few things in this class! Thin is good. Plus, it tastes better when it's thin.



I am pleased with how the sides turned out. The star-flowers are so cute, and I like the dots. So now I need to deliver the cake to its intended "victim." Hopefully she'll let me have a taste!

  1. I've watched people work with fondant on the Food Network and it looks challenging! I think you did a nice job. :)
    I've always wondered how it tastes in comparison to regular frosting. It sure looks sharper.
    I'm sure your "victim" will love it.

  5. I am actually pleasantly surprised by how easy it is: buttercream has elements that are, in my opinion, trickier. Funny that it says "fall" to you... I was thinking "spring" when I made it. But either way, right!

    Yes, SmithTrek, you're probably thinking of the right "victim."

    MissKate, I'm glad you like the star flowers! I was pleased with how they turned out. Not too bad for a first timer, right? Of course, I smashed a LOT of fondant back into edible playdoh over the past week! Squashing your first efforts makes the first cake look oh so much prettier.

  8. Thanks! I am practicing, working my way up to a wedding cake, so this is a bit fussier than your ordinary "every-day" cake. But surprisingly, it's not really that much work. Fondant is pretty easy to work with. And I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the fondant cake was, though the cake itself was a bit dry from being over-cooked, I thought. We'll see if my "victims" notice. They've taken it away, and I'm waiting for feedback now. =D

  9. Your "victims" loved it! It was devoured rather quickly. (-: Thanks so much for thinking of us. We were all very impressed with your cake decorating skills--the kids fought over who got to eat the flowers and they wondered how you got the "blanket" to look so real. You're very talented and we are blessed to have such a wonderful friend!

  10. Good! I'm glad that you liked it! If you want, we can make up a batch of marshmallow fondant (I'm wanting to play with that) and I'll show them how I made the blanket, and then they can play in the frosting. It'd be a fun playdate, though you'd probably have to warn them that we'll have to be sharing tools, since I don't have a huge set.
